I believe that we, and all that surrounds us as far out as the cosmos, are interconnected. The actions of one impact the rest, but yet we are unique individuals in and of ourselves. Like words in a poem, each person is individual and distinct from the other, yet we can be constructed in harmony.
I learned to be an individual at a young age when I realized I would never really fit into one place, one culture, one group of people or one environment. Spending my childhood moving from one place to another before I could ever truly adapt was not easy in many ways, but it allowed me to become very comfortable with myself and my distinctiveness. In fact, I’ve come to love being different! My favorite ways to express my individuality are through the clothes that I wear and the art I choose.
I believe that expressing one’s individuality and finding creative outlets can help a person understand who they truly are.
As a child I was constantly creating new things- new dresses made of odd material, fun haunted houses in the basement and many, many forts. If I wanted something I would create it, leading to a career of creation which resulted in 18 patents.
I also have a passion for bringing joy to others. I am the first to befriend a newcomer. I am a champion of the underdog. It makes me happy to help others.
During my career one of the most fulfilling experiences was to mentor and develop employees to help them achieve their fullest potential. It felt like seeing a flower bloom… Exhilarating.
Thus, a new flower has bloomed: My passion for creation and the fulfillment that I feel when I can bring joy to others intertwined and brought me to create AKT Design. The scope of my work is twofold: I’m here to help those who want a piece designed exactly for them but also those who want to experience creating that piece with me.
Custom pieces come from the inspiration that I derive from getting to know you before I begin creating. I want to see you. I want to create something you will love and feel special wearing or displaying. I want a personal story behind every piece I make.
Classes will help you create your own one of a kind piece. I want to be part of helping you develop your own skills and styles. I want to enable you to create items which are a pure expression of who you are.
Felting serves the senses and creativity. It is much like clay; you can shape it into almost any shape imaginable, and what can be made is endless. The repetitive placement of wool is meditative, the fine strands of wool are as soft as threads of silk. Meanwhile, the soft touch of silk fabrics is ethereal. Adding other fabrics invites infinite color, pattern and textural possibilities. Embellishments are endless- one can hand dye, eco-print with flowers and leaves from gardens. Other fiber arts such as knitting, embroidery and beading can be of additional interest. Pieces of wood or shells can be embedded. The possibilities for creation are truly endless!
This is who I am, this is what I do. It makes my heart sing in chorus with all that is around me, and I want to share that experience with you!
